DIOCESAN BISHOP
The Rt. Rev. Alfred C Reid was enthroned as the thirteenth Bishop of Jamaica in the Cathedral Church of St. Jago de la Vega on January 25, 2001. He succeeded the Right Reverend and Honourable Neville deSouza. Bishop Reid was consecrated Suffragan Bishop of Montego Bay on the 26 July 1980 and held this position until he became the Diocesan. On Bishop deSouza’s retirement in September 2000 he assumed duties as Canonical Administrator of the Diocese and was elected Lord Bishop of Jamaica at a Special Synod and Elective Assembly held on December 12, 2000. Bishop Reid assumed responsibility for the Eastern Jamaica Region in 2005.
He was ordained a priest in 1961 and served as curate at the St. James Parish Church 1960 – 1965, Rector, Vere Cure, 1967 – 1971, Rector of the Stony Hill Cure, 1971- 1978 and Chaplain of the Jamaica Defence Force. He holds the Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the Episcopal Theological College, the Master’s in Education from Boston College and the Doctorate of Divinity (Honoris Causa) from the Episcopal Divinity School. He is married with three children.
Mandeville Region
The Rt. Rev. Harold Daniel was consecrated Suffragan Bishop of Mandeville on February 11, 2000 in the Mandeville Parish Church. He had previously been Rector of the St. Michael’s Cure, Kingston, a position he held from 1990. He had served as Rector of St. Ann’s Bay Cure, 1978 – 1990. He was a Church Army Captain 1960 – 1978 and Director of Youth for the Diocese, 1969 – 1978. In 1989 he was appointed an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral. His wife Judith is a Canon of the Cathedral and they have two children.
Montego Bay Region
The Rt. Rev. Howard Gregory was ordained and consecrated Suffragan Bishop of Montego Bay on June 11, 2002. He was ordained a deacon in 1973 and a priest in 1974.
His first appointment was that of Anglican Chaplain of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies. He later served as Chaplain and Lecturer at the Church Teachers’ College in Mandeville from 1978-80. He was appointed Acting Anglican Warden and Tutor at the United Theological College of the West Indies in 1980, and served concurrently as Priest-in-charge of the Golden Grove Cure. Returning from study leave in 1986, he was appointed Anglican Tutor and Lecturer in Pastoral Care and Counselling. In 1987 he was promoted to the position of Deputy President of the UTCWI. In 1990 he was appointed President of the College and served in that capacity until 2002 when he was elected Suffragan Bishop of Montego Bay.
Bishop Gregory holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology, the Diploma in Ministerial Studies and a Diploma in Education from the University of the West Indies. In addition, he holds a Master of Sacred Theology degree from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia, a Doctor of Sacred Theology from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, and a Master in Business Administration from the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Indiana.
Bishop Gregory has been conferred with the Doctor of Divinity degree (honoris causa), by the Graduate Theological Foundation and the Virginia Theological Seminary, respectively.
He is married and has one daughter.
Kingston Region
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert McLean Thompson - coming originally from Forth William, Westmoreland - received his secondary education at Jamaica College. Following his call to the ministry of the Church he entered the United Theological College of the West Indies from which he graduated in 1973. He was ordained a priest in 1974. His continuing education included a Masters in Sacred Ministry from McGill University in 1979 and most recently a Doctor in Ministry – D.Min. - from Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, in 2004.
He served as Curate at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Rector of St. Jude’s, Stony Hill and later St. Andrew Parish Church, Half Way Tree. He was made a Canon of the Cathedral in June 2001. He was elected as the third Suffragan Bishop of Kingston at the Synod of March 2005 and consecrated and ordained in May 2005.
He has served on several Boards and Committees including the Council of the Institute of Jamaica and Jamaica Justice Reform. He currently serves on the Board of Kingston College, the YMCA, Kingston Restoration Company, and more recently the Police Service Commission. As a member of the Provincial Synod of the Church in the Province of the West Indies (CPWI) he served for seven years on the Anglican Consultative Council which facilitates cooperative work among the Churches of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
Bishop Thompson is married and has two sons Matthew and Joseph.
