The Church of the Holy Spirit, in Cumberland, St. Catherine, journeyed on March 21, 2010 to the site of its first official home at 31 Surrey Avenue, Independence City, to conduct Evensong, as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations. This is the home of Mr. Cleveland Bramwell, who opened his verandah for Sunday School classes in the Church’s early years.
The Service was led by Rev. Michael Elliott, Rector of the Church. The lessons were read by Karen Henry and Carmen Smith, while special prayers were said by Monica Baugh, Cathlene Barnes, and Eileen Henry – all foundation members, as well as Pauline Power, who has served the Church for many years. Members present were invited to share their personal experiences and relationship with the Church.
In his message, Fr. Elliott underscored the symbolism of building altars, wherever we worship, as an act of thanksgiving to God. Just before the end of the service, he blessed the home, accompanied by one of Mr. Bramwell’s daughters, Marlene, while the congregation sang ‘This is Holy Ground.’
The Church will officially launch its 40th anniversary celebrations on Palm Sunday, March 28, at another former place of worship, the Independence City Community Centre. The service will be preceded by a march from the Shell gas station and the guest preacher will be Sister Norma Thompson, who served the Church during the early years.
