The Jamaica Church Missionary Society (JCMS) is moving to strengthen the focus on Mission across the Diocese in order to promote greater understanding and active involvement by individual members in fulfilling their Christian responsibility to “go and make disciples of men.”
The initiative is part of a broader process of renewal in the Church discussed by the JCMS General Committee at its conference in October 2009. It is aimed at creating the foundation for the effective implementation of the Church’s mission of evangelism, spiritual transformation, service and outreach in local communities; while also building a more vibrant, committed and responsive membership.
Noting that the lack of organized teaching about Mission posed a major challenge for sustained growth of the Church, the JCMS General Committee is recommending that, in keeping with the provisions of Canon 15, Article 5, a structured education programme be pursued. Following are the proposed elements: • A specific Sunday is to be observed as MISSIONARY SUNDAY in every Church each year. The aims of the JCMS should be highlighted during the Service; members of the congregation should be taught about Mission and Outreach and most importantly, they should be mobilized to participate in ongoing mission work, including house visits. • A JCMS Deanery Representative may be invited to speak at the Missionary Service. • A Week of Mission should be organized in an effort to sensitize members to Mission strategies and achievements around the world.
As the Missionary arm of the Church, the JCMS is responsible for its Evangelistic thrust, as well as the establishment and welfare of missions, especially in communities that do not have access to spiritual leadership. All communicant members of the Anglican Church are considered members of the Society. Representatives from each of the 14 Deaneries of the Church, as well as the four Bishops serve on the JCMS General Committee.
