Brothers Among Candidates For Ordination
June 28, 2010

Two brothers, Khan Oscar Honeyghan and Rory Andre Honeyghan, are among ten candidates who will be ordained as Deacons and Priests of the Anglican Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands at a service scheduled for Sunday, July 4 at 4.00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Jago de la Vega, Spanish Town.

The Honeyghan brothers, along with David Anthony Reid, are full-time students from the United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) who, having completed four years of training, are being ordained as Deacons. Two other candidates from the Supplementary Ministry - a part-time training programme offered by the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands - will also be ordained to the Diaconate. They are Paul Anthony Sharp, who is attached to the Church of the Transfiguration, Meadowbrook; and Rita Grace White, from St. Michael’s Church, Belfield, St. Mary.

The five Ordinands to the Holy Order of Priest are: Cleverton Rohan Beckford, Assistant Curate at St. Gabriel’s Church, May Pen; Errol Lloyd Dyer, Supplementary Minister, attached to St. Matthew’s Church, Jackson Town, Trelawny; Horace Byron Sylvester Mellish, Supplementary Minister attached to St. James Parish Church, Montego Bay; Cheryl Beverley Phillips, Assistant Curate at The Church of the Reconciliation, Bridgeport, St. Catherine and Ulric Nefert Wilson, Supplementary Minister attached to the Morant Bay Parish Church, St. Thomas.

Diocesan Secretary, the Rev. Fr. Denzil Barnes, said the candidates have all completed the prescribed course of study and have satisfied the examining chaplains of the Diocese, a body comprising both clergy and laity, as to their suitability for the priesthood. As priests they will have specific responsibilities for administering the Sacraments of the Church, including Baptism, the Holy Communion, the Marriage Ceremony and Funeral Rites, in addition to other pastoral duties.

Rev. Barnes noted that, in addition to their training in theology, several of the Ordinands hold first degrees in a variety of disciplines and bring a wide range of professional experience to their  vocation in the Church. He added that this augured well for the Ministry of the Anglican Church.

The rite of Ordination will be performed by the Suffragan Bishop of Mandeville, the Rt. Rev. Harold Daniel, while the preacher at the Service will be the Suffragan Bishop of Kingston, the Rt. Rev. Robert Thompson. The Master of Ceremonies will be the Rev. Major Denston Smalling. The highpoint of the Ordination Service will be the laying-on of hands by the Presiding Bishop, and the ceremonial robing of the new Priests and Deacons.
